Program by Emily Posner: Maine's Role in the Global Water Crisis
Thursday, June 18, 7-9 pm, Ellsworth City Hall Auditorium
Emily Posner will be the speaker at the June meeting of the Hancock
County Democratic Committee. Posner is an activist for water rights in
Maine and internationally. She is a co-founder of the Winter Cache
Project in Portland, Maine and is a board member of Common Ground
Relief in New Orleans, Louisiana. She currently serves as coordinator
for Defending Water for Life in Maine, www.defendingwaterinmaine.org.
From the organization's website:
"Today, one in 6 people lack access to safe, affordable water and the
United Nations expects this number to rise. Amid this crisis, some of
the world's wealthiest corporations--like Nestlé and Coca-Cola--are
making a profit, often at the expense of the poor. Water, like air,
is a necessity of human life. It is also, according to Fortune
magazine, 'One of the world's great business opportunities. It
promises to be to the 21st century what oil was to the 20th.' A
vibrant international movement is challenging the corporate control of
this precious resource, and defending water as a public good and an
inalienable right."
Water rights are becoming an issue for municipalities around Maine as
they work to balance the public interest with economic interests.
Posner will discuss water issues in Maine in context with the global
water crisis.
The program will begin at about 8 pm, following HCDC's regular
business meeting. The meeting and program are open to the public. For
more information, visit www.hancockdems.org.
