Protect Maine's Water for People and Nature
Dear Water Justice Advocate:
Join us on Thursday at 9 AM at the State House to show your support
for LD 663 .
Maine towns must have the right to assert their home rule authority
to control and prohibit commercial water extraction within their
municipality.
Please join citizens from around Maine at the State House on
Thursday, March 19 at 9:00 a.m in Room 214 of the Cross Building. The
Legislature's Natural Resource Committee has scheduled a public
hearing on LD 663 introduced by Rep. Jim Schatz of Blue Hill regarding
a municipality's right to govern their town's groundwater.
As for-profit water interests in Maine continue to grow, many towns
throughout the state are now grappling with tough decisions about
commercial water extraction projects in their area. Maine town's must
be able to maintain their democratic authority under Home Rule to
protect their water for people and nature into the future.
> LD 663 is intended to protect a municipality's right to govern
> water extraction within its jurisdiction. In order to carry out the
> original purpose of the bill, Rep. Schatz is expected to ask the
> committee to amend the bill by striking the word "regulating" and
> inserting the words "controlling or prohibiting."
>
> The Defending Water for Life Campaign would like to encourage you
> to attend the hearing and show your enthusiasm to protect Maine towns'
> right to govern groundwater extraction.
>
> The Natural Resource Committee needs to hear your support to amend
> this bill....town's need to ensure their right under home rule to
> control and prohibit commercial groundwater extraction if they so
> choose.
>
