Subj: Join us this Sunday at the Grand

                  FISHING MOVIES:
PAST PRESENT AND FUTURE When:
Sunday August 15th

Time:
5pm

Location:
The Grand, Main St., Ellsworth

These herring were photographed in Stonington this summer. Thirty years
ago
we would have seen boat loads of all kinds of groundfish including hake
and
cod. Where are they now? When are they coming back to eastern Maine?

Penobscot East Resource Center presents two films
and a conversation that vividly tell this story.

"Finest Kind", a charming 1975 half-hour documentary made by then
Vinalhaven resident film-maker Constance Richardson, vividly depicts the life of
this vibrant fishing community at a high point in its history.

"Fishing Voices: Insight Into The Future", a twenty-minute contemporary
video by North Haven native Cecily Pingree, documents a disappearing era
through the stories of fishermen who remember when the Gulf of Maine was
brimming with fish and when all that was needed was little more than their
knowledge and a compass.

After the movies, Executive Director Robin Alden two fishermen from
"Fishing Voices" - fisherman-scholar, MacArthur Fellow Ted Ames and Gouldsboro
fisherman John Renwick will discuss efforts to restore the once productive
fishery.
