"Despite being in the middle of negotiations that could drastically  
cut the federal funding that supplements state Medicaid, SCHIP,  
Temporary Assistance for Needy Families, and other assistance programs  
(known as FMAP)--resulting in the loss of as many as 900,000 jobs  
nationwide--Susan Collins says it's not her problem.


Reid has since reached out to Sen. Susan Collins (R-Maine) in hopes of  
getting her cooperation in moving the larger bill, and Democrats  
appear ready to trim back the level of new state assistance in the  
bill to win over moderates.


Center stage is the question of $24 billion to help governors pay  
their states’ Medicaid bills and thereby avoid further layoffs."
