The US defence secretary has cautioned against over-optimism in  
Afghanistan, despite recent gains on the battlefield for

The late December massacre of 10 civilians, including nine  
schoolchildren, in Afghanistan’s Kunar Province, in an overnight US- 
led raid has continued to be a matter of contention for the Afghan  
government, trying to sell the continued foreign military presence to  
an increasingly war-weary public.




Today, however, the Karzai government sought to close this chapter in  
the seemingly endless series of NATO forces killing civilians, when  
President Karzai announced he had paid the families of the nine  
children some $2,000 each in “blood money” to compensate them for  
the loss.

Serving members of the Elite SAS Regiment







BRITAIN’S special forces have suffered the worst blow to their  
fighting strength since the second world war, with 80 members killed  
or crippled in Afghanistan.

Serious injuries have left more than 70 unable to fight, while 12  
have been killed. It means the forces have lost about a sixth of  
their full combat capacity.
