The Restorative Justice Project of the Midcoast to be Subject of
MPBN’s Maine Watch
Belfast, Maine – The Restorative Justice Project of the Midcoast will
be the subject of the Maine Public Broadcasting Network’s public
affairs series Maine Watch hosted by Jennifer Rooks. The thirty
minute show will air on MPBN Thursday and Friday, December 17 & 18 at
8:30 PM. There will be a rebroadcast on Sunday at 5:30 PM. The
program will focus specifically on RJP’s Community Reentry Program
and the Community Resolution Team Conferences. There will be a panel
during the second part discussing a more global perspective of
restorative justice.
The Restorative Justice Project of the Midcoast (RJP) is a not for
profit organization which was originated five years ago as an
alternative to the criminal justice system’s punitive response to
crime. Working within the justice system RJP focuses on repairing
the harm done to victims. It does this by holding the offenders
accountable and encourages them to take responsibility for the harm
they caused; it offers rehabilitative alternatives to jail; it
promotes healthy decision making; it reintegrates offenders into the
community; and, it engages the community as partners in restorative
responses to crime.
Maine Watch will feature members of a Community Resolution Team
Conference in which an adolescent and the person harmed met with
community members and through a structured process developed a
mutually agreed-upon contract to repair the harm. A second focus
will be the Community Reentry Program which helps individuals make
the transition from jail back into the community with the help of a
mentor. Maine Watch will conclude with a panel consisting of Dr. T.
Richard Snyder, Chair of RJP, Scott Story, Waldo County Sheriff, and
Mark Westrum, Correctional Administrator, Two Bridges Regional Jail,
Wiscasset, Maine.
