The Militant Suffragists' and Their Banners (1913 - 1919)

This Thursday October 13th  10 a.m. Blue Hill Library

Posie Cowan will display four family suffrage banners and tell what she
learned from discovering them.  She did not know that her sixty-five year
old great grandmother was arrested four times in 1918 for demonstrating in
front of the White House. Many women were sentenced to jail and a few went
on hunger strikes while in prison. These militant suffragists were the first
social activist group to demonstrate in front of the White House starting in
1917. Although they were called radical, these suffragists practised non
violent civil disobedience.

These suffragists would be horrified to learn that a hundred years later
women hold only 17% of the seats in Congress.

At the end of her talk Posie will introduce staff and students from UM NEW
Leadership that is a six day non partisan residential program for college
women who are interested in leaderships positions in government.
