Newsletter editors,
Here are some calendar items for March (plus a few earlier and/or
later). FEEL FREE TO PICK AND CHOOSE AND NOT USE EVERY ITEM. If you
know of things that should be publicized, please send them to me by
the 15th of the month preceding the month when the event occurs.
If you know of events coming up, please send these to me so I can
include in this calendar. I don't have time to search for things, so
your assistance is really a big help in getting notice of more
upcoming events.

Notices:
The newest edition of "Saving Seeds," from Food for Maine's Future,
has articles on Farmer Dan Brown, being sued by the state of Maine
for selling raw milk, challenges to Monsanto's seed patents, "Occupy
the Food System," and seed saving. Other articles discuss food self-
reliance, local food and community self-governance ordinances, the
Keystone XL pipeline, and other articles related to local food self-

Three Solidarity scholarships ($500 and 2 x $250) are being offered
to members of the Eastern Maine Labor Council or Food AND Medicine
and any family member of a laid off worker. Applicants need to define
what "solidarity" means to them in their application. Students also
need to explain briefly what their education plan is and type their
response of about 250-300 words. Send responses by April 25 to Food

A new video on solitary confinement from the National Religious
Campaign against Torture is available for showing in Maine. Titled
"Solitary Confinement: Torture in Our Backyard," the 15-20 minute
film describes the 2010 campaign in Maine to reduce or eliminate
solitary confinement as a form of punishment. The film is available
from the Maine Council of Churches, 772-1918 or
jsaxby at mainecouncilofchurches.org.
