On Friday April 25 the critically acclaimed movie Gen Silent will be shown at the Howard Room, Blue Hill Library 7pm. This 2010 documentary, filmed in the Boston area, presents six LGBT seniors as they struggle to decide whether to stay open about their sexuality, remain in the closet or hide again to survive in the current health care environment. There are almost 35 million LGBT Americans over 65 (12.5 percent of the population) and fifty percent LGBT live alone compared to 33 percent of the general population. The Chicago Sun-Times said, “One of the most important documentaries to come out this year,” and Huffington Post proclaimed, “The filmmaking is personal, heart-breaking, and the issues are real.” Local sponsors for this showing are At Home Downeast, Peninsula Peace and Justice, and SAGE Maine (An Affiliate of Services & Advocacy for GLBT Elders). Healthcare providers, caregivers, and anyone helping our elders should be aware of the potential inequity issues that can face the aging LGBT community as they maneuver through the complicated health care system. Doug Kimmel, of SAGE Maine, will lead a discussion following the movie. For more information contact Joan MacCracken 326-0916 or Doug Kimmel at info at sagemaine.org
