> Nancy Dewey set out for the Peruvian Andes in 1979 at the age of twenty-six, intending to live in a mountain community and record the lifestyle there for three months. She hoped to create a book of black & white traditional images to give to the village. However, for her first few months in the village of Tinta, she hardly used her camera-- the people needed to get to know her and vice versa before she began representing their culture through her eyes.

> Dewey remained in the village of Tinta (meaning color or dye) for ten months during her first visit. Upon her recent return, she was able to accomplish her initial goal of publishing an intergenerational book in three languages, start a library, and donate 1,000 copies to the community thirty-four years later. When she returned to Peru and reconnected with people she knew decades before, many of them had relocated to find work along the Peruvian Pacific Coast.

> Fortunately, Dewey studied Spanish as a second language and continues speaking it whenever she has the opportunity. However, Quechua, which is the language of the Incas, is still primarily spoken in the Andes. Dewey learned enough Quechua to understand the rich humor of the campesinos (farmers).
