Barbara Blazej of U/Maine to Give Talk About Cuba Today and Show Film
The Peace and Justice Group of Waldo County presents a reprise on their very successful Cuba Film Series of this past summer with another program on Cuba that will begin at 6:00 p.m. on Thursday Sept. 24th in the Abbott Room of the Belfast Library.
The program features Barbara Blazej, faculty member from the University of Maine Peace and Reconciliation Studies Program, who, along with a group of her students and several other faculty members, went to Cuba in March 2015.
Starting with a 15 minute slide and narrative presentation of scenes of contemporary Cuba as well as explanatory comments by U/Maine students and Ms. Blazej, the program continues with a short film made by one of the students entitled "Viva Cuba."
Responses to a single question put to about twenty Cuban citizens, i.e., professionals working with NGO's and State Agencies providing free educational, health, housing and food services to the people as well as students, dancers, musicians and rural agricultural workers and farmers, make up the film. This technique reveals, through their answers, the candid expressions of the quality of their everyday life as well as the overall sense of a proud and confident people free of repression or coercion by their government.
After the short film, educators and students will take questions and participate in a discussion by all in attendance.
The Peace and Justice Group hopes that this program and format will provide to many of those who attended the Cuba Film Series, the opportunity for questions and discussion about Cuba that was not available at some of the films this summer. Admission is free; donations will be accepted. For more information, call Cathy at 323-5160.
