Selections from, J. FRED WOELL: ART IS AN ACCIDENT, the 2015 retrospective from the National Ornamental Museum in Memphis, TN,   will be exhibited at the Haystack Mountain School of Craft's Center for Community Programs, opening Sunday, October 11 from 3:00 to 5:00. Also on view will be works, made from found objects off of Fred's bench, by fellow national metalsmiths to honor Fred. All sales will benefit the Haystack, J. Fred Woell Scholarship fund. Fred's books and  exhibition catalogue will be available as well.

J. Fred Woell was a Master Metalsmith and a Maine Master, known for using political and social commentary in the creation of jewelry. He was renowned for his found object assemblages, reflecting and critiquing the throwaway culture of late 20th century America with his characteristic wry humor. He found continuity and solace in nature and held a great respect for the environment.

 A teacher of rare generosity, he taught at Boston University, Swain School of Design, Haystack and SUNY/New Paltz. His works are in many permanent collections to include: MAD Museum, N.Y.C., LACMA, L.A., Renwick Gallery of the Smithsonian,Washington, D.C.  and the Hermitage in Russia. In 2014, Fred received the Lifetime Achievement Award from SNAG, and in 2012 Florida Society of Goldsmiths Hall of Fame award. He held MFAs from University of Illinois, Champaign-Urbana, University of Wisconsin, and Cranbrook Academy.
