Ranked Choice Voting - How Will It Work in Maine?

Focus of Two Programs

It looks like voters in Maine will be using ranked choice voting in the primary election this June 12. How will it work? What do voters need to know to participate in the primary election?

Everyone is invited to join the ongoing discussion of this topic at the Unitarian Universalist Church of Ellsworth on Wednesday, April 25 from 5.30-7.00 p.m. That’s at 121 Bucksport Road, Ellsworth. ME 04605 <https://maps.google.com/?q=121+Bucksport+Road,+Ellsworth.+ME+04605&entry=gmail&source=g>.

Our guest will be Jon Monroe, outreach specialist at Maine Uses Ranked Choice Voting, a project of the League of Women Voters of Maine. Jon has extensive experience in elections following several years working in the Elections Division for the Maine Secretary of State.

We will discuss the mechanics of the RCV process, what the ballots will look like, how will they be counted, and how long the process will take. Everyone will have the opportunity to cast a sample ballot. Light refreshments will be served after the event.

This in-person event continues the conversation from the League’s monthly radio program. On Friday, April 20th, from 10-11 a.m., the League’s Democracy Forum radio program on WERU-FM (89.9) will feature:

John Brautigam: public interest attorney, senior advisor and strategist to League’s project, Maine uses Ranked Choice Voting.
Grace Ramsey: Deputy Outreach Director for Fairvote, a national electoral reform advocacy group.
These guests will be discussing issues relevant to RCV with moderator Ann Luther of the League of Women Voters-Downeast. Listeners are invited to call in with questions in the second half of the show.

The League of Women Voters, a non partisan political organization, encourages the informed and active participation of citizens in government, and influences public policy through advocacy.
