The dead of winter is a good time to think about permaculture, a system for sustainable design for the land and nature. Groups in several parts of Maine have information on how to create permaculture designs for individual and community plots of land. Those include: Portland Permaculture (www.portlandmainepermaculture.com), the Newforest Institute in Brooks (www.newforestinstitute.org), Humastacia Permaculture in Whitefield (549-5978), Moose Pond Arts and Ecology in Otisfield (www.moosepondarts.com/permaculture), and the Long Green House in Orono (longgreenhouse.wordpress.com/).
Maine Citizens for Clean Elections (MCCE) is back to work on legislation to solidify the public financing system for elections in Maine and to remind people to add money to the Clean Elections Fund when filing state income taxes. The Clean Elections Fund was raided by "borrowing" some of its fund for other state programs. The MCCE is demanding the return of that money so candidates in 2010 will have money to run their campaigns. For more on its work: www.mainecleanelections.org.
