A 1,000 sq. ft. downtown Bangor storefront a few doors from the main intersection has just become available at low rent to a local food cooperative. Many consumer-owned food co-ops (Belfast, Blue Hill, Rockland, etc.) began as buying clubs with a central drop-off that became a successful retail grocery store. Today, co-ops are looking at owning local spaces as central distribution sites or places to process, even sell prepared food, as Local Sprouts is doing in Portland at their Community Supported Kitchen. Significant organizing, legal, technical and financial resources are available to help move this idea to reality!
