For many local residents, this will be the wild blueberry growers GM Allen, Allen’s Blueberries (a different company), and Merrill, who have engaged in spraying pesticides by helicopter for many years. The Maine Board of Pesticides Control (BPC) recommends that on spray days, usually early in the morning, you stay indoors, close the windows, keep your children and pets indoors, and avoid hanging clothes on the line while pesticides are being sprayed.</div><div style="margin-top: 0px; margin-right: 0px; margin-bottom: 0px; margin-left: 0px; padding-top: 0px; padding-right: 0px; padding-bottom: 0px; padding-left: 0px; line-height: 24px; ">Although growers are only required to notify those within a quarter mile of the spraying,<span class="Apple-converted-space"> </span><u>anyone</u><span class="Apple-converted-space"> </span>can register, and you will probably be notified of any spraying anywhere near you. You will likely receive notifications even if you are just in the same zip code as the spraying, because it’s easier for the growers to make up their lists that way. Eight years ago I was caught in pesticide drift from a field a half mile from where I live and I developed chemical sensitivity as a result. There are approximately 200,000 deaths per year globally due to pesticide poisoning. Each year many local folks and their children and pets get sprayed and get sick.
