I was chagrined to read the front-page article in the Bangor Daily 
yesterday.  The only example of consolidation that it referred to was 
Lewiston and Auburn, which would be OPTIONAL under the plan that the 
Appropriations Committee is proposing.  As we all know (I hope), it's not 
the OPTIONAL consolidation that is objectionable.

Optional consolidation is NOT a newsworthy story.

There was no discussion about the newsworthy story: the smaller schools 
that will undergo MANDATORY consolidation - those schools that will be at 
the mercy of the DOE's rationale, whim and politics.
