Subject: Sample Talking Points

Hi All,

The public hearing for plans to consolidate Maine schools will be held
at the Augusta Civic Center from 9am to 8pm on February 5th. These
plans threaten to dismantle our island schools and communities.
Islanders who care about the future of their schools should attend.

Island residents who are available should plan to meet at 10:15 under
the "Save Island Schools" banner that will be located in or near the
lobby of the Augusta Civic Center. Bring 40 Copies of your written
testimony to submit to the committee and be prepared to speak for 3
minutes. The Island Institute will invite the press to discuss the
consolidation issue with islanders at 10:15am at the Save Island
Schools banner. After our gathering we will get in line to testify.
Roger Berle of Maine Islands Coalition will lead off with Donna Damon
second, followed by students, teachers, parents and school board
members. I am sending along a revised version of the sample talking
points for your use. Please feel free to distribute them widely so
that those who plan to come and speak for the islands are familiar
with points that this workgroup of islanders developed.

Please bring two extra copies of your talking points for me to collect
for the press.

I am out of the office the next two days but can be reached on my cell
at 691-2393 if anything urgent comes up. Otherwise, please contact
Sally Perkins at 594-9209x103.

See you on the 5th!
Rob Snyder
Vice President of Programs, Island Institute
