I want to let you know that the Ed. Committee voted yester 11-0 ought-to-pass-as amended on Sen. Raye's bill to make the State Board of Education more geographically representative than it is now. This bill now says that each congressional district must have four members on the Board and the remaining 9th member can be from either district. It also call for geographical consideration when appointing so that not all members could come from Sangerville as an example. I testified on behalf of the Coalition in favor of the bill.
One change in the bill was to remove the size of towns that had to be represented and change it to take into consideration the size of a municipality.
Another amendment allows an appointed member who moves from one district to another to remain on the Board until their term is up.
The implementation of this bill will not remove any present member, but will be enforced when that member's term is up.

Jim Carrigan and Ellie Multer of the State Board supported the LD.
