This was a letter I e-mailed to The Bangor Daily over a week ago. Thus far, I believe, it has not been printed. I was told it would take at least a week, because of the stack of letters. I was also told that there were other issues out there! In addition to BDN, I also sent it out to Edmonds, Cummings and Damon.

Subject: School Consolidation

To all Maine Senators and Representatives:

I am appalled at the lack of compassion the state feels towards the parents and communities of Maine regarding this school consolidation plan. I am shocked that the good people voted in by our state could so wholeheartedly support this heavy-handed plan.

I am shocked that you can't feel what so many feel. The total lack of support for community members who have stood solidly by their schools, protecting the education of our children.

I just don't understand how this has come to the point of voting for a plan that so closely reminds me of communism and slavery. How can you say we must support this plan, pay the bills for buildings that no longer belong to the community. The assets of the schools are more than just mortar and brick. They are the heart of our community. And our children are the heart and soul of our individual villages. To take away the quality of our schools in some arbitrary way as to justify a number of students per district, rips away the values and soul of the parents in the community. It sears the very soul of so many parents who care and take pride in their children, their schools and and their choices to raise and choose the education of their own children. This is the core of my frustration.

I have spoken to parents from Bangor, down through the coast of Maine and all feel as I do. It is complete folly to me to believe that a simple promise of a few hundred dollars in a tax refund could be a bribe for my children's education. Barter anything else but my children's future.

Sincerely,
Catherine Drew Burdette, Mt. Desert
