[Local-Maine-Schools] Apple has (secretly?) released a fix.

There is a fix for the broken-Rosetta problem now.

Yesterday, news came out that Apple had revised the update:

http://macdailynews.com/2012/02/04/apple-releases-snow-leopard-security-update-2012-001-v1-1-to-correct-rosetta-issues/

It wasn't clear from that whether the new release (v. 1.1) repaired the
damage from v. 1.0, or was just a replacement for 1.0 (for those who
hadn't done the earlier installaton) that didn't do any damage.

I went to Apple's page for the security update:

https://support.apple.com/kb/DL1489

and downloaded from the link that was there:

http://support.apple.com/downloads/DL1489/en_US/SecUpd2012-001Snow.dmg

Interestingly, the only change in the page from earlier is the mention
of v. 1.1. The release date -- February 01 -- is patently false. It's
the release date of v. 1.0, and as far as I can tell, it took Apple
several days to become aware of the problem and do something about it.
It seems reminiscent in a way (to me, at least) of someone throwing a
rock at a window and then turning away and walking whistling down the
street as if nothing had happened. There is no mention on the page of
whether this new update would be helpful to those injured by the flying
glass.

I don't know what the situation is regarding Software Update's reminders
to Mac users that they need to run the security update, which anyone who
held off after hearing the problems with that update will continue to
see. I don't know whether you get 1.0 or 1.1 when you run it.

I do know that if you download 1.1 from the above link and install it
independently of Software Update, Software Update's list of "Installed
Software" won't include it. But when you check to see if there are
updates, you are told there aren't any.

So I guess the best approach is to run Software Update. If nothing
breaks, you're OK. If it does break, you can always download it from the
link above and install it separately.
