With passage of LD 1932, "An Act to Amend the Laws Regarding School Funding," and its amendments by the House of Representatives and Senate, the new regional school unit could face another cut in state subsidy of $244,000. That is in addition to the $1 million cut included in the proposed budget.

"The situation in Augusta is very confusing," said Chet Garrison, chairman of the Union 47 Joint Board, who spent Monday in Augusta lobbying the local legislators to vote the bill down.

"We were told by our legislators we wouldn't be affected if the bill passed," Garrison said. "But we were told by the Department of Education that if the bill passed and was signed by the governor, we'd take a hit of $244,000. It's unbelievably confusing. The reality is the bottom line may change yet."
