Betting the Farm, the Movie
Join the League of Women Voters Downeast at the Ellsworth Public Library on Wednesday evening, September 11, at 5:30 p.m. for a free public screening of the award-winning documentary film, Betting The Farm. Light refreshments will be served, and a panel discussion will follow. We expect some of the farmers featured in the film will be there in person to join the conversation.
Produced by Maine-based filmmakers, Cecily Pingree and Jason Mann, Betting The Farm is the story of a group of Maine dairy farmers who, dropped by their national milk company in 2009, were suddenly confronted with the real possibility of losing their farms. Some of these farmers banded together to launch a new, entirely local milk company, Maine’s Own Organic Milk Co., or MOO Milk. The company is owned by the farmers themselves. If it succeeds, it could prove a model for sustainable, small-scale farming and local agriculture.
The public showing of Betting The Farm is part of a year-long study of sustainable agriculture that the League of Women Voters is doing. LWV welcomes participation by others.
Sponsored by the League of Women Voters of Downeast Maine. Co-sponsors include WERU-FM Community Radio, Ellsworth Farmers Market, Everybody Eats, UUCE Peace and Social Action, Peace and Justice Center of Eastern Maine, Sustainable Harvest, Hancock County Transition Towns, Downtown Ellsworth Association, Alliance for Democracy, Hancock County AAUW, and Peninsula Peace & Justice.
The public is invited to attend.
