The legislative session is coming to a close on 4/18/12. The time remaining to influence our legislators this session is short. Occupy Augusta is calling on all Occupiers to join us in a day of protest on Thursday, April 12, 2012, against the corporate interests that are taking over our state. At 3:00 we will be gathering on the sidewalks outside the lobbyist Preti Flaherty located on State street at the western rotary to again protest against the influence of the corporate lobby, the American Legislative Exchange Council (ALECexposed.org) and its dirty lobby money. ALEC model laws have invaded our legislature this session and ALEC money perverting the political process in Maine with its far right agenda. One of the ALEC/NRA originated laws, the stand your ground law, was implemented in Florida and is responsible for the murder of Trayvon Martin. We hope that you wear a hoodie to honor his passing.
At 4:15 we will move to the Senator Inn on Western Avenue to protest a meeting of the corporate interests responsible for pushing the privately funded East / West highway. This private toll road will bisect our state and serves no purpose for our citizens. It will only serve the interests of Canada by providing them with direct access to a year round deep water Atlantic seaboard port and a utility corridor for tar sands oil and LNG gas pipelines and nuclear power transmission. We must stop this assault on Maine’s sovereignty and demand a stop to its investigation and construction. Please forward this call to action email to all of your activist contacts.
We expect that the weather will be challenging so dress appropriately.
