RELEASE COLLEGE OF THE ATLANTIC PRESENTS TALK ON NOVA SCOTIA MARINE POLICY COA graduate returns to discuss work chairing Nova Scotia Provincial Oceans Network CONTACT: Donna Gold, Public Relations: 207-801-5623, 207-266-4470, dgold@coa.edu

BAR HARBOR, ME-Nova Scotia is considering a new management focus for its waters, and one of the key figures in developing the policy is a College of the Atlantic graduate. On Thursday, April 28, Justin Huston, chair of Nova Scotia’s Provincial Oceans Network, will be returning to COA to discuss his work. The talk, “Our Coast: The future of coastal management in Nova Scotia,” will be at 4:10 p.m. in the college’s McCormick Lecture Hall. It is part of the college’s spring Marine Policy Speaker Series.

Huston is the chair of Nova Scotia’s Provincial Oceans Network, an interdepartmental body responsible for the development and implementation of the province’s new 10-year coastal strategy program, the first of its kind in Canada. Unlike the United States, where federally supported state coastal management programs have been in place since the 1970s, Canadian provinces are only now beginning to develop their own coastal management programs.

Huston graduated from COA in 1999, and earned a masters degree in marine management from Dalhousie University in 2001. He heads Nova Scotia’s oceans network as part of his position at the Department of Fisheries and Oceans in Halifax. Huston also serves on the board of directors of the Coastal Zone Canada Association, and was the secretariat chair to the Gulf of Maine Council on the Marine Environment in 2008 and 2009.

In his talk, Huston will discuss the issues driving the government to take action, and provide an overview of the new approach to coastal management that is being considered. The network, which is composed of stakeholders from provincial departments and agencies, is charged with providing advice and expertise in implementing a coastal management framework and coordinating coastal and ocean management issues and initiatives within the provincial government.

An avid surfer in his spare time, Huston promises to at least answer questions about surfing around Mt. Desert Island.

For more information on the talk at 4:10 p.m. on Thursday, April 28, contact Chris Petersen at CHRISP@coa.edu or 288-5015, 207-801-5715. Free.
