Field of Flags Blue Hill Mem. Day Weekend

Please share with friends and e-lists.

This year we will also be planting flowers. Please bring whatever is available to you:
Annuals or seeds
Perennials
Compost or seaweed
Garden dirt (buckets)
Jugs of water
Mulch materials
Garden tools, gloves, bug dope
The aim is to plant along the fence; we will need to dig up the reluctant sod and replace with garden dirt for planting.
Many hands and backs are needed. Please plan to come and bring a friend.

PENINSULA PEACE & JUSTICE

TO CREATE ANNUAL IRAQ WAR DEAD MEMORIAL

BLUE HILL –  On Memorial Day weekend, Peninsula Peace & Justice invites the community to participate in planting the Iraq War Dead Memorial Field on Main Street in downtown Blue Hill.

This memorial, first established in 2005 to remember the lives lost in the Iraq War, now also recognizes U.S. military fatalities in Pakistan and Afghanistan. The field, located on the property of Rufus Wanning, is planted annually with white flags, representing the now over 6,400 US soldiers killed.

The thousands of flags planted in late May this year will include Dirigo flags representing the 51 Maine soldiers killed since the invasion of Afghanistan in 2011.  A sign in the field periodically updates the number of US lives lost.  It also acknowledges the loss of more than 1.3 million civilians in the course of these operations.

The event will take place on Saturday, May 26, from 10:00 to 12:00, right between the Blue Hill Library and the Blue Hill Congregational Church. Everyone is invited to participate in part or all of this action. (A rain date will be Sunday May 27.) For more information, contact 326-4405.
