Citizen Trade Policy Commission
The Effects of International Trade on Maine
The Trans-Pacific Partnership trade agreement negotiations continue based on the same free trade model as NAFTA. Maine has lost 30,000 jobs since the North American Free Trade Agreement was implemented. If enacted, because of its size and scope, the Trans-Pacific Partnership (TPP) is destined to be the largest Free Trade Agreement ever. The TPP trade agreement takes aim at policies that maintain health, the air we breathe, the water we drink and the food we eat and the conditions of our jobs.
The Citizens Trade Policy Commission (CTPC) was established by Maine’s legislature to provide an ongoing state-level mechanism to assess the impact of international trade policies on Maine’s state and local laws, business environment and working conditions and for citizens and legislators to voice their concerns and make recommendations. As part of its mandate, this legislative body is holding a public hearing.
At this hearing, the CTPC is particularly interested in food safety and phytosanitary (control of plant disease) issues but they will welcome testimony on any trade-related subject or issues.
