Monday Night Meeting on Frances Perkins, 7:00pm 8/8/11

Please pass along to others in your group or area. Thanks.

In light of the recent controversy over the labor mural in Augusta, which includes Frances Perkins, and attacks on working people around the country, this talk should be especially appropriate and important.

Harborside, MaineOn Monday, August 8th at 7:00pm, The Good Life Center will present a Monday Night Meeting on the life and work of Frances Perkins, presented by Perkins’ grandson, Tomlin Coggeshall. Coggeshall will discuss Perkins’s life history, her commitment to social justice and economic security, and her association with Helen & Scott Nearing.

Though Frances Perkins played a central part in the New Deal as FDR’s secretary of labor in the 1930’s and ‘40’s, history largely passed over her contributions until recently.  Coggeshall’s talk will explore some of the possible reasons for this, and will also provide information about the Frances Perkins Center that has been formed recently at the Perkins homestead in Newcastle, Maine to preserve her history and carry on her work.

Other upcoming Monday Night Meetings at The Good Life Center include SUSTAINABLE ART: Sustainability through Arts and Agriculture with Kevin Campbell on August 15th, and an annual Open House & Garden Tour on August 22nd.

For more information on upcoming Monday Night Meetings, people may visit www.goodlife.org. The Good Life Center also offers tours of the Nearing home, gardens and grounds from 1:00pm to 4:00pm Thursday through Monday, or by appointment. People may contact Warren Berkowitz at 374-5386 for more information.

The Nearing home will open at 6:30 on August 8th. The homestead is a half hour drive from Blue Hill. From Blue Hill village, take Routes 176, 15, and 175 through South Brooksville, turn left onto Cape Rosier and follow the signs for The Good Life Center to 372 Harborside Road.
