Pastors for Peace under attack by IRS

Friends, The first time the Interreligious Foundation for Community Organization (IFCO) was attacked by the IRS was during the Cointelpro years. After surviving that prolonged struggle, IFCO has gone on to spend the next 40+ years in service to communities of color, in support of Native American rights, anti-Klan work, justice for Haitian immigrants, the struggle for self-determination in Puerto Rico and Central America and so much more. Please take a few moments to read and respond to this new struggle.

Calls on the IRS to cease its political persecution of IFCO

Let Cuba Live has worked in partnership with IFCO/Pastors for Peace since 1992. Our shared goals of friendship between the people of Cuba and the US, normalization of relations between Cuba and the US, respect for the sovereignty of Cuba, and an end to the illegal and immoral blockade against Cuba have been realized in our participation in the US-Cuba Friendshipment caravans every year. Let Cuba Live has also been side-by-side with IFCO for numerous other activities in celebration of the achievements of the Cuban Revolution. Our attempts to bring humanitarian aid as well as friendship to the Cuban people and to achieve freedom to travel have been a hallmark of the work of Let Cuba Live. We stand in solidarity with IFCO’s efforts on behalf of blockaded and oppressed peoples in Cuba, Haiti, Central America and the Occupied Territories of Palestine. We recognize the leadership that IFCO has taken in bringing together groups and individuals, people of faith and people of conscience, from many countries in the struggle for justice.

Let Cuba Live deplores the actions taken by the IRS in threatening IFCO’s fundamental organization as a 501(c) (3) institution, a status it has maintained since 1967. It is clear that the threats and harassment are political in nature, that the complaints are unfounded and are intended to prevent IFCO from carrying out its vital work in providing assistance to communities in need. Let Cuba Live deplores US action in continuing to keep Cuba on the list of state sponsors of terrorism without reason.

We call on the US Treasury/IRS to end its persecution and harassment of IFCO. We call on the supporters of Let Cuba Live and all those called to work for peace and justice to lend financial support to IFCO’s legal defense.

Let Cuba Live is a Maine-based committee working since 1992 to promote respect for Cuba’s sovereignty and independence. Let Cuba Live calls for an end to the U.S. blockade against Cuba; an end to travel restrictions that prohibit U.S. citizens from visiting Cuba; normalization of relations between the U.S. and Cuba; closure of the Guantanamo Naval Base; and freedom for the Cuban Five.
