TALK AT MORGAN BAY ZENDO Sunday, August 12 at 11 am: Tim Buckley, Soto Zen Buddhist priest will speak at Morgan Bay Zendo. The public is invited to attend.

The Morgan Bay Zendo of Surry will be welcoming Thomas (Tim) Buckley this Sunday, August 12. He will be giving a talk at 10:00 am to 12 noon on Zen Buddhism. The public is welcome to attend the meditation session at 9 am -10 am or/and the 10 am talk.

Tim is an American anthropologist and Buddhist monastic best known for his long-term ethnographic research with the Yurok Indians of northern California. He received his Ph.D. in anthropology in 1982 from the University of Chicago, where he studied under Raymond D. Fogelson. His decades-long fieldwork with the Yuroks, beginning in 1976 (following upon Buddhist training in California under Shunryu Suzuki (1965-1971) which culminated in his ethnographic monograph Standing Ground, published in 2002. Buckley taught anthropology and American Indian studies at the University of Massachusetts Boston for many years and at other institutions as a visiting professor. In 2011 he was ordained as a Soto Zen Buddhist priest, Jokan Zenshin, with a lay community group, Great River Zendo, in West Bath, Maine.
