We can’t stop our opponents from asking every Maine primary voter to sign a petition that seeks to erase the basic protections we’ve fought so hard to win. But voters should understand that this petition is a first, significant step toward undoing Maine’s non-discrimination laws, barring unmarried people from adopting children who need homes and eliminating our schools’ successful civil rights teams.
The math is simple: if enough signatures are gathered, we will face another referendum battle in November 2009 – and once again, our protections will be on the line.
The supporters of this petition are going to be out in force on June 10. That’s why we’ll be at the polls, too, and that’s why we need you to stand with us.Our staff is working around the clock to organize a presence at polling places statewide. Please sign up by Monday, June 2, so we know we can count on you. With your help, we believe the fair-minded people of this state will see the petition’s true colors……and choose to walk away.Thank you for all you do to support equality in Maine.
