Group for Dads, Step-Dads & Grand-Dads”

The Hancock County Children’s Council is pleased to announce that our Parenting with Dignity® series has been changed from a monthly group to a weekly group on Tuesday evenings in October & November 2010 at 5:30-7:30pm.  Five men began the series last night, and are inviting other dads, step-dads and grandfathers to join them.  A special make-up session will be held at 4pm on Tuesday, October 12th for anyone who wishes to join this group.  If

you are interested in participating in this FREE series, please call Candy Eaton at 667-5304 ext. 261.
Downeast Health Services is hosting this weekly parenting series just for men titled “Parenting with Dignity®”.  Based on the video series of the same name, Mac Bledsoe (NFL Drew Bledsoe’s father), shares his parenting philosophy ““Our children will make all of the most important decisions in their lives – on their own. As parents, the only thing we can do is teach them how to make good decisions”.
Fundamental to the Parenting with Dignity® curriculum is a focus on developing parenting skills that help to address many of the challenges faced by inexperienced and unprepared parents. Help your kids to realize their dreams by:

  • Discovering “the three P’s of goal setting”
  • Find out about the five simple, but powerful rules for parents
  • Learn six reasons why punishment does not bring about meaningful change in children
  • Learn how to obtain appropriate behavior from your kids
  • Open the lines of communication
  • And, have them develop sound decision making skills

with Dignity® teaches parents how to instill a sense of responsible decision making in their kids.  This is a positive approach to parenting that is simple, easily understood, applicable in any situation, and incredibly intuitive. Learn how to foster happy, self-directed children with a strong value structure and a sense of accountability for their actions. Discover how to teach your children to act appropriately in different situations, and to be confident in their self worth because they know they have the unconditional love of their parents and belief in themselves.
Downeast Health Services Inc, is promoting protective factors for protecting children and promoting healthy families.  Protective

factors are conditions in families and communities that, when present, increase the health and well-being of children and families.    They are attributes that serve as buffers, helping parents to find resources, supports, or coping strategies that allow them to parent effectively, even under stress.
A child’s early experience of being nurtured and developing a bond with a caring adult affects all aspects of behavior and development.  When parents and children have strong, warm feelings for one another, children develop trust that their parents will provide what they need to thrive, including love, acceptance, positive guidance and protection.
