People for the American Way sent the following reminder that a petition has been set up on the White House petition site demanding that Obama support the idea of the money-out-of-elections Constitutional amendment during his State of the Union address. The petition has more than enough signatures to force a response from the White House, but every bit helps. https://petitions.whitehouse.gov/petition/use-state-union-call-constitutional-amendment-get-big-money-out-politics The note also indicates there is a Congressional “Declaration for Democracy” supporting an amendment, being signed by members of Congress. Probably worth nudging Chellie (202-225-6116) and Mike (202-225-6306) about that. Dick ——– Original Message ——– Yesterday, U.S. Representatives Donna Edwards (D-MD), Ted Deutch (D-FL), Keith Ellison (D-MN), James P. McGovern (D-MA), and John Yarmuth (D-KY) circulated a letter urging their colleagues to join them in signing the /Declaration for Democracy/. The Declaration reads: “I, _________, declare my support for amending the Constitution of the United States to restore the rights of the American people, undermined by /Citizens United/ and related cases, to protect the integrity of our elections and limit the corrosive influence of money in our democratic process.” People For the American Way is working with allies in Congress and across the country to get more public officials signed on to the Declaration of Democracy. *We’re also working with many of the same partners to urge President Obama to address the urgency of undoing the harm of overturning /Citizens United v. FEC/, by constitutional amendment, in his upcoming State of the Union Address on Tuesday.* President Obama has been using his bully pulpit effectively in recent weeks in advocacy of immigration reform, gun safety and fiscal policy. We need to do all we can to make sure he’s also making the case to the American people that unlimited corporate influence in elections is a threat to our democracy that must be addressed now. *PFAW activists and others have weighed in on a petition hosted at WhiteHouse.gov to get President Obama to do exactly that. If you have not added your name to that petition, which now has over 35,000 signatures, please take a moment to do so right now. https://petitions.whitehouse.gov/petition/use-state-union-call-constitutional-amendment-get-big-money-out-politics We’ve already ensured that we’ll get an official White House response to the petition by getting to 25,000, but we need to garner as many new signatures as we can if we want the petition’s true goal of getting the president to address /Citizens United/ in the State of the Union to be realized. There is /overwhelming/ public support for overturning /Citizens United/, and for other reforms that would restore the power of the ordinary voter in American Democracy while limiting the influence of billionaires and corporate special interests. Our national movement to get the money out and restore Government By the PEOPLE is growing every day and, with your continued support, we’re going to take our democracy back. Thank you for all your activism and hard work. Sincerely, Marge Baker, Executive Vice President _______________________________________________ HCCN mailing list HCCN@mainetalk.org https://mainetalk.org/mailman/listinfo/hccn_mainetalk.org
