Last Saturday, Nov. 14, about 30 people gathered at the War Dead
Memorial in Blue Hill to gather up the 5,275 white flags for the
winter and read aloud the names of victims of war.
Thank you to everyone who has supported and appreciated the Memorial.
The day began with the reading of an Ojibway prayer:
Grandfather,
Look at our brokenness,
We know that in all creation
Only the human family
Has strayed from the sacred way.
We know that we are the ones
Who divided
And we are the ones
Who must come back together
To walk in the sacred way
Grandfather,
Sacred One,
Teach us love, compassion, honor
That we may heal the earth
And heal each other.
The names of all 920 US soldiers killed in Afghanistan since October
2001 were read, along with 50 pages of names of Afghan civilian
casualties. The flags were gathered in bundles, wrapped in colored
cloth, and laid on a "war dead" cloth, that had been created by Pat
Wheeler and friends during one of the senate office occupations in
2005. A little over 2-1/2 hours was spent in reading names, with a
group from Bar Harbor (including Veterans for Peace members ) and a
group from Belfast (members of the Raging Grannies) helping.
Channel 5 News came to cover the event, as well as Bangor Daily News
and The Weekly Packet of Blue Hill.
For those who read the BDN, there is a good photo on page B2 of
today's edition (Nov. 16).
