Mr. Hinck mentions an interesting phenomenon among the Reps...
I'm passing this on because of the general interest in the topic, not
because I'm supporting his next candidacy.

Dick,

Thank you for signing the recent Maine budget petition and for standing
up for all of those who need the vital services subject to cuts.

*Your voice – along with the voices of more than 5,000 other Mainers –
was heard.* Last night in the Maine Statehouse, legislators in Gov.
LePage's party grimly told me how many of their constituents had signed
the petition. They would have preferred if their votes for this the
unfair and shortsighted budget were cast quietly and unnoticed. The vote
was divided along party lines. This morning, LePage quickly signed the
budget into law making the cuts he sought crippling vital services and
ending health care for thousands.

During the budget debate, I supported amendments that would have
restored some funding for services for the most at-risk children,
seniors, and disabled people. The cost of each of these amendments would
be covered. For example, we proposed saving services merely by
requiring that the top 1% of earners pay /no less in taxes/ than the
average worker. But instead of having those who make more than $350,000
per year give up new tax cuts, Republicans chose to keep all of the
sacrifice on struggling Maine families.

I will turn my full attention back to my campaign for the United States
Senate when the Maine legislature adjourns. In
many respects, I look to achieve some of the same things there as here:
tax fairness, equal opportunity, economic and social justice. The
primary election on June 12th will be an important moment in the campaign.

As we know, the challenge we face in Maine has parallels in our
nation's capital. In Washington there is relentless pressure to rig the
rules of the game in favor of the most powerful and well-connected. In
both arenas, it is a battle every day to assert the interests of working
families.

There is clearly much to be done. For everyone who works for positive
public policy or who wants to be a part of such efforts, I would like to
be in touch and look forward for the opportunity to work with you.

Please continue to stand up for the health of Maine’s children, seniors,
and families and to work for the most positive future possible for our
state and country.

*With your commitment and action we can make meaningful progress.*

Thank you,

/*Jon*/

says Congress needs to recalibrate its compass away from powerful
interests toward working-class Americans. It's his combination of
idealism and pragmatism, Hinck says, that makes him the most viable
candidate to solve our nation's most pressing problems."/ Listen to the
