The *December 2009* calendar will soon be posted to our website at
www.downeasthealth.org. The complete 14 page calendar may be accessed
online, which includes ongoing activities, support and workshops. You
will also find recommendations for reducing stress during the holiday
season.
Below, you will find some activities to get you started. Please do not
hesitate to ask for a printable version of the complete calendar
including recurring weekly & monthly events throughout our area.

/Mondays: /*_Ellsworth _*10:00am-11:30am: Hancock County Children's
Council presents "Mommy and ME" weekly group for Moms and their babies
(newborn to one year) at Downeast Health Services, 52 Christian Ridge
Road, Ellsworth. Facilitated by Barbara Seura, come meet other mothers
(first-time or experienced) and their babies for 6 weeks of weekly fun
and tips to develop healthy strong bonds between you and your new baby.

12.01.09 *_Sullivan_* 5:30pm-7:30pm: FREE Family Potluck and Holiday
card-making event for families with children newborn to 8 years old, to
be held at Sumner Adult Learning Center, 2456 US Highway 1, Sullivan.

12.02.09 *_Sullivan_* 5:00pm-7:00pm (3 Wednesday evenings): Keeping
Kids Safe Online, presented by Adult Learning Center, Sullivan. Call
422-9100 to register and FMI.
12.02.09 *_Ellsworth_* 6:30pm: Annual Ellsworth High School Financial
Aid Night in the high school cafeteria. Bruce Hazen, director of
financial aid at the College of the Atlantic, will discuss the FAFSA,
SAR and EFC. Those attending will learn about the process of letting
colleges know that you are interested in financial assistance. Find out
why filing your federal financial aid form is easier done
electronically. Listen to timely tips for moving smoothly from high
school senior to fiscally responsible college student. Evening is open
to everyone, parents and students of any age and in any grade. A
variety of handouts will be available for at-home use. Pizza, salad &
beverages will be provided from 6:00-6:30pm. FMI, call 667-8892.
12.02.09 *_Bucksport_* 6:00pm: Bucksport PTO presents "Understanding
Sibling Relationships" with Candy Eaton, Hancock County Children's
Council, at their monthly meeting in Miles Lane School Library. Any
household with more than one child is familiar with the sounds of
sibling rivalry. Rivalry can range from "who gets the biggest piece"
arguments to free-for-all brawls in some families. This discussion
focuses on building strong sibling relationships. Parents and other
caregivers will understand the reasons for sibling rivalry and will
learn ways to reduce fighting among siblings. Learn to let your
children express their feelings, avoid comparing them, and trust each
child as an individual. Remember that when you help your children get
along better, you are preparing them for important relationships in the
future with co-workers, spouses and even their own children.
12.03.09 *_Bangor_* 8:00am-3:30pm: Suicide and Violence Prevention
Gatekeeper Training, sponsored by Maine Youth Suicide Prevention Program
at Husson College, One College Circle, Bangor. This workshop is an
introduction to suicide prevention, intervention and postvention
information. The focus is on the use of basic suicide intervention
skills rather than in-depth assessment or counseling skills to use with
suicidal people. Professional "backup" in support of Gatekeepers is

12.08.09 *_Ellsworth_* 9:00am-12noon: FREE */"Recognizing Signs of
Stress in Families"/* training for mandated reporters of suspected child
abuse and neglect presented by the Hancock County Children's Council.
The training will help you understand the role of mandated reporters,
recognizing child abuse and neglect, responding to disclosures of abuse
and neglect, how to make a report, DHHS CPS process and the linkage of
child abuse and animal abuse. Limit 15. To register & FMI, please call

Council "Relatives as Parents" *FREE* Monthly Support Group at Downeast

12.09.09 *_Blue Hill_* 6:30pm: "Breaking the Silence" will host an
informational session on "Keeping our Kids Safe" at the Blue Hill
Congregational Church. Mary Kellett, Assistant District Attorney in
Hancock County, will speak and answer questions. The public is invited
to attend. Mary Kellett graduated from George Stevens Academy & rec'd
her BA from Yale University & law degree from the UMaine Law School. For

12.11.09 *_Ellsworth_* 1:00pm-5:00pm: "Keep ME Warm" training at
University of Maine Cooperative Extension, Boggy Brook Road, Ellsworth.
