New Surry Theatre proudly presents
live, online performances of
The Laramie Project
NST has taken this production – originally intended for a performance “in-the-round” in the Blue Hill theater space – onto the internet, in dedication to the important role the arts play in community, especially in moments of challenge. Each actor will perform live from the setting of their own home.
In many ways, The Laramie Project is the perfect performance for this moment. From 1998-2000, members of the Tectonic Theater Project conducted hundreds of interviews with community members of Laramie, Wyoming following the murder of Matthew Shepard, a gay University of Wyoming student. The result of those interviews is The Laramie Project, a stunningly honest and provoking dive into prejudice, the complexity of our understanding of one another, community, and what we mean to each other. Because the play occurs through individual, verbatim accounts, it lends itself beautifully to an online production.
Ten New Surry Theatre actors will take on the roles of 65 community members, each of whom shares a deeply honest reflection on the murder and what it meant to the community of Laramie, and each of whom yearns to be seen fully.
This special production is presented during PRIDE month and as a celebration of the capacity of the arts to illuminate all that is vital and possible within a creative, collaborative community. Join us for “The Laramie Project”!
Each performance is streamed LIVE!
